Daiku

It is no mistake that the name Daiku suggests a relationship to the word haiku. Daiku is a project that explores the concision and metaphorical nature of haiku, but with digital shorts that intensly delve into the material and bring the perceiver into contact with a delicate and poetic interpretation of the choosen visual and sound material.

Rather the idea is approach the elegance of style and the layered meanings that allow mythological works to serve as a portal between the physical and metaphysical worlds. It is hoped that the direct nature of the forms contrasts with the ambiguous to create a place for the perceiver to enter and interpret the work in a meaningful manner.
The interrelation of few and simple elements that are out of context with one another, in shots that generate a de-contextualized location, that expand in the interpretation of it, generates an open and ever-expanding experience of it.

The visual and sonic components of Daiku were created seperately by Alejandro Casazi and Christopher Jette. Based on discussions of an aesthetic direction and a notion of entering the inner world of the material at hand, each artist set out to coax the subtle nuances of their media into something that resounds with their notions of the project. Through subsequent meetings the discoveries are discussed and crituqued and a digital still begins to form. The resulting work is but one in a larger series of Daiku digital explorations.

The explorations can roughly be understood as being either and entrance, a departure from or existing in the sphere of the Daiku aesthetic. This is an ongoing project, which will result in several outputs. The most obvious of which are the digital shorts, video and sound pieces to be appreciated on their own terms. Another facet are prints that are visual stills resulting from the video and sound. These will take many forms, from stills that are directly from the footage, to footage that is shaped by the accompanying sound and anywhere within this spectrum. Another intended outcome is the production of a meta project that will combine moments of the various digital shorts together randomly, with each playing. This video will draw on all the short projects as material for a larger presentation, that will be quasi randomly organized. The larger video will result from an algorythem that chooses moments and interpolates between them.

The processing of the visual and sonic material is a combination of hand labor and digital intervention. Each moment is drawn from a repository of elements that the artists generated by hand, by the manipulation of existing digital media hardware. This material is then layered together, sometimes working together and other times as points of contrast. One of the underlying goals is to bring the audience in contact with the inner world of both the visual and sonic elements and through this allow the associations and suggestions of the artist understanding of the material to manifest.

The sound world is drawn from the sounds of plucked strings which is presented both at the usual level of perception. The inner sound world of a resonating string presents a subtle melodic contour all it’s own, this serves as a point of departure both literaly and aesthtically.
